What are PCBs?

PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls, are highly toxic industrial man-made compounds consisting of carbon, hydrogen, and chlorine atoms. PCBs have no known taste or smell, and range in consistency from an oil to a waxy solid. PCBs were widely used in the past, mainly in electrical equipment (like fluorescent light fixtures) and building material (such as caulk and paint). While many countries banned the use of them in the 1970s due to their environmental and health concerns, the compounds are generally very stable and as such, they remain present in the environment today. PCBs pose serious health risks including increased chances of melanomas, liver cancer, gallbladder cancer, biliary tract cancer, gastrointestinal tract cancer, and brain cancer, and may be linked to breast cancer.

How are we Exposed to PCBs?

There are many ways we might come in contact with PCBs, including:

  • Working with older equipment and appliances – Equipment manufactured before 1979 most likely contain PCBs. Small amounts of PCBs can leak into the air when they heat up during operation, during accidents or fires, and could be a source of skin exposure.
  • The main source of PCB is from contaminated food, particularly fish caught in contaminated waters. PCBs can build up in the fatty tissues of fish and other animals, and pass to humans who consume the contaminated fish, meat, and dairy products.
  • Many people are exposed to low levels of PCBs in the air they breathe, particularly indoors. Breathing air near hazardous waste sites or drinking contaminated water could result in PCB exposure.

How do PCBs affect Human Health?

Different people are affected differently by PCBs, depending on their genetic makeup, the number of PCBs they are exposed to, and/or any other toxic exposures in their environment. Many suggest there is a link between exposure to PCBs and increased risk of cancers of the digestive system, the liver, and the skin. High levels of PCBs may affect human reproduction, neurological health effects (like numbness and headaches), and skin conditions like acne and rashes. Liver damage has been noted as well, along with various eye problems.
